East and West Sussex Liberal Democrat MPs have come together in Westminster to mark Sussex Day, joining Speaker of the House Sir Lindsay Hoyle in celebrating the rich heritage and culture across the historic county.
Sussex Day is held annually on 16 June, the feast day of St Richard, the 13th century Bishop of Chichester whose shrine at the city's cathedral once drew pilgrims in numbers rivalling those who travelled to Canterbury. First established in 2007, the day is an opportunity to celebrate everything that makes Sussex distinctive, from its landscapes and traditions to its proud local identity.

Chichester MP Jess Brown-Fuller said:
"Sussex Day is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on just how special this county is. Chichester sits at the heart of Sussex's history: from St Richard's shrine in our magnificent cathedral, to the Roman walls that still line our city streets.
I am proud to represent a constituency with such a rich heritage, and I hope residents across West Sussex take a moment today to celebrate everything that makes this corner of England so unique."
Eastbourne MP Josh Babarinde said:
"I want to wish everyone in Eastbourne and across Sussex a very Happy Sussex Day. It is a chance to celebrate everything that makes our county so special, from its rich history to its wonderful local traditions.
Whether it's Bonfire, Stoolball or a pint of Harvey's, Sussex has so much to be proud of. I am continuing my campaign to see some of our local traditions recognised by UNESCO, helping to ensure they are protected and celebrated for generations to come."
Lewes MP James MacCleary commented:
“Sussex Day is a wonderful chance to celebrate everything that makes our county so special. As the MP for Lewes, our historic county town, and coastal towns such as Seaford, I am incredibly proud of our rich heritage and the communities that bring it to life, from farmers to fisherman. I hope people will take a moment to celebrate our day with one of our many fantastic local brews!”
John Milne, MP for Horsham, stated:
“It's great to see Sussex being celebrated each year on this day. We have so much to be proud of, from our brilliant businesses and local produce to the strong sense of community that runs through our towns and villages. I'm constantly reminded of the dedication and creativity of people in Horsham; it's an absolute honour to represent them in Parliament.”
The Sussex Liberal Democrat MPs' celebration of Sussex Day in Westminster follows the recent West Sussex County Council elections, in which the Liberal Democrats won 23 seats with 23% of the vote.
