Jess Brown-Fuller MP trialled a new ferry service that will run between Hayling Island and West Wittering.
The new small business, operated by local resident Patrick White, founder of Chichester Harbour Charters, launched on Easter weekend. A crossing from Hayling Island to East Head will take 15 minutes, instead of up to an hour by road.
Jess met Patrick at Sparkes Marina, where the ferry is based, and joined him on a trip across the water to the sandy beach at East Head.
The ferry is wheelchair accessible and passengers will also be able to transport their bike for a £1 supplement. A single ticket will cost £8 and a return journey £12.
The service will run from 9am to 7pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with potential to expand to seven days a week during summer months if there is demand.
Following the visit, Jess Brown-Fuller said:
“This is a really exciting new service that will make a big difference to local residents.
“With so much congestion on the A27 and on the roads down to the Witterings, the new ferry will allow people to leave their car at home, get out on their bikes, and across the water.
“We are very lucky to have such an incredible asset like Chichester Harbour and the wider coast on our doorstep and I hope this will allow more residents to get out and experience all that it has to offer.”
The ferry service arrives as a new stretch of the King Charles III Coastal Path has opened from South Hayling to East Head, giving walkers access to a 35-mile stretch of coastline and areas previously out of reach.
