Jess Brown-Fuller MP calls for emergency meetings to respond to extreme flooding across Chichester constituency

Jess Brown-Fuller, MP for Chichester, has written to Arun District Council (ADC) and West Sussex County Council (WSCC) following reports of severe flooding across Chichester constituency.

Jess Brown-Fuller has urged ADC to convene an emergency meeting of the Arun Flood Forum to coordinate a response to the extreme flooding affecting the Bersted and Shripney area. In a separate letter to WSCC councillors, she called for an urgent multi-agency meeting to address flooding impacting coastal villages and several parts of Chichester District.

Residents in Runcton, Almodington, Maudlin, Sidlesham, Bersted, and Shripney have reported significant flooding in recent days, with further heavy rainfall forecast.

Sidlesham Primary School has been forced to close with floodwaters blocking access, whilst a newly built care home in Shripney has seen around 12 inches of water on the road outside.

In North Mundham, residents have shared stories of sewage pouring out of showers and overflowing from toilets due to significant strain on sewage networks.

The flooding follows a period of exceptional rainfall, with Surrey, Kent and Sussex all breaking into the top 10 list of wettest Januarys in 190 years.

In her letter to WSCC, Jess Brown-Fuller also asked the County Council whether it has explored a flood report for the wider Chichester area, highlighting that a Section 19 flood report was carried out in 2025 focusing on Shripney, Yapton, and Bognor Regis.

Jess Brown-Fuller said:

“What residents are experiencing is untenable. Schools are closing, roads are underwater, and people are unable to go about their lives. This cannot continue.
“These problems have been raised repeatedly over many years. With extreme weather becoming more frequent due to climate change, the risks are only increasing. Years of large-scale development across Chichester has no doubt exacerbated the current situation.
“Local authorities need to take action and convene emergency meetings to keep people and properties safe, as well as discussing future resilience for the area, to ensure everyone is doing all they can to resolve extreme flooding, once and for all.”
