A statement has been released by Sussex Liberal Democrat MPs in the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UH Sussex) area on the findings in the final reports of the National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation (“the Amos review”):
“The Amos review exposes a maternity system under real strain, where staff are committed to providing good care but face significant workload pressures due to unsafe and inconsistent staffing levels across the four hospitals in UH Sussex. This has impacted the quality of care with tragic consequences.
“One of the most distressing findings in this report is the number of women who felt ignored during labour or unsupported after the trauma of baby loss or a difficult birth. At such vulnerable moments, women must be listened to, respected, and treated with compassion. When women say something is wrong, they must be heard.
“The culture and conditions described by Baroness Amos have to change, and rebuilding trust with women and their families must be at the heart of the work the Trust now does to improve maternity care in Sussex.”
