Jess Brown-Fuller presses for independent inquiry after collapse of China case

Jess Brown-Fuller, MP for Chichester, has called for a statutory independent inquiry following the collapse of a high-profile national security case linked to alleged Chinese interference. Speaking in the Commons during an Urgent Question, Jess said the situation “makes an absolute mockery” of a serious threat to national security, warning that the danger “is not going away but will only increase.”

The intervention came after witness statements released on Wednesday night raised questions about whether pressure had been applied within the Conservative Party on MPs Tom Tugendhat and Alicia Kearns to tone down their criticism of China.

Brown-Fuller, also pressed ministers to confirm whether the Crown Prosecution Service had warned the Government that the case was at risk of collapse and whether clearer communication could have prevented it.
