Jess Brown-Fuller visited Southbourne’s Sunday Coffee Roasters, an independent speciality coffee roaster specialising in responsibly sourced, exceptional and often unconventional speciality coffees from across the world.

Originally founded in 2015, the company has been on the Southbourne site since 2022. Sunday Coffee Roasters sell their beans both online, in local independent shops across West Sussex and Hampshire, and to cafes.

During the visit, Jess met with founder Pravin Isram to discuss the company’s engagement with the local community, including its work supplying coffee to a school in Leigh Park. Their conversation also explored the barriers to youth employment in the area, as well as the wider challenges facing start-ups, including the difficulty local entrepreneurs can face when seeking space to rent for their business - during the pandemic, Pravin relocated his business to Southbourne Farm Shop after struggling to find suitable space elsewhere.

The visit comes amid growing concern across the hospitality sector, with many other small businesses speaking out about the challenges they are facing due to rising costs. Jess has advocated for meaningful reform of the business rates system to alleviate those struggling under an outdated system, as business rates have long been criticised for hitting pubs, restaurants, the service industry and retail businesses particularly hard.

Speaking after her visit, Jess said:

“Small independent businesses like Sunday Coffee Roasters are at the heart of our local economy and are quietly creating something exciting and unique in quiet corners of our area.
It’s inspiring to see a company so committed to quality, sustainability and community. Supporting businesses like this helps keep our high streets vibrant and showcases the very best of what our area has to offer.”
