Jess Brown-Fuller MP has today written to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions urging the government to provide compensation to women affected by maladministration in changes to the state pension age.
In her letter to Pat McFadden MP, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Jess called on the government to act in line with the findings of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO), which concluded in March 2024 that the Department for Work and Pensions failed to properly communicate state pension age changes to millions of women born in the 1950s.
The Ombudsman found that despite internal evidence showing many women were unaware of the changes, the Department did not take adequate steps to inform those affected. As a result, an estimated 3.8 million women faced unexpected financial hardship and disruption to their retirement plans.
Jess welcomed the government’s decision to review its previous refusal to award compensation but warned that the process must finally deliver justice and closure for those impacted.
