Following the government announcement today, 23 December, that inheritance tax relief thresholds for farmers will rise from £1 million to £2.5 million, Jess Brown-Fuller MP has now urged the government to go further and scrap the family farm tax in full.
Responding to the news, Jess said:
“British farmers are the very foundation of rural communities the length and breadth of the country. The Chichester constituency has some of the highest grading of agricultural land in the country, and is home to 178 farms.
“I have been proud to stand alongside Chichester’s farming communities to campaign against the unfair family farm tax. Liberal Democrats were the first to call out and oppose the tax in last year's Budget.
“This concession has been hard won, and I am incredibly grateful to all the farmers who have fought tirelessly to achieve this.
“While I welcome the government's latest U-turn, this announcement has come far too late, and it is wrong that family farmers have been put through over a year of uncertainty since the government first announced these changes.
“The government must now listen to our farming communities and agree to scrap the family farm tax in full.”
